Training Bursaries

There is a range of funding options to support you while you train on a School Direct course.

Bursaries and scholarships are available for the training fee school direct route (not salaried).

You can only receive one type of funding (i.e you cannot receive a bursary and a scholarship).

Loans are available to support your training fees this is available through Student Finance England and the Student Loans Company

You can use the Loan Calculator to work out an estimate of your loan repayments, however loans are repayable only once you are in full-time employment and earning above a certain amount.

You may also be eligible for financial support to help with living costs with a maintenance loan.

There’s extra financial support available if you meet other criteria so it’s worth checking.

Scholarships are awarded by professional bodies for these subjects, and scholars will be selected through an additional application and assessment process. Each scholarship also comes with a package of non-financial benefits, such as early career support and membership of the appropriate professional body. To apply for a scholarship and for further information, you should visit the appropriate subject association website:

  • Physics – delivered by the Institute of Physics (IOP)
  • Maths – delivered by the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA), in collaboration with the London Mathematical Society (LMS), the Mathematical Association (MA), Maths in Education and Industry (MEI) and the Royal Statistical Society (RSS)
  • Chemistry – delivered by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC)
  • Computing – delivered by the BCS, the Chartered Institute for IT

The scholarship will be instead of the standard bursary, but trainees who are not awarded the scholarship will still be eligible for the standard bursaries.
